Today's Friday, right? During the summer the days just melt together. I feel guilty for being so happy school's starting soon, and I can be alone for a portion of the day. I also feel guilty that I won't be getting a job, but I always feel guilty for not having a job, so that's nothing new. And before you cry, "Writing is a job!" just remember that I am not getting paid for it, and also it's a lot of fun and therefore suspect. The real reason I don't have a conventional job while the kids are in school is the fragrance thing. Periodic exposure I can handle. Daily exposure would surely put me back in migraine territory, and nobody in the house wants that. I do have a few very large home repairs I can't afford to hire out, so maybe I'll call myself a carpenter and that'll be my job.

I will probably start looking for some sort of job to do from home, but I don't know if I'm enough of a self-starter to follow that through. One interesting development to report is that I'll be the senior editor of a little startup e-pub called Cove. The details haven't been hammered out yet, but I'll let you know what happens. It will at the very least be a huge learning experience, and at the most a financially successful venture. Can't lose.

My brother is also starting school this month. It's a huge change for him, as it would be for anyone going back to college after 20 or so years (25?) And I'm super-proud of him for even attempting it. I've never had the guts. And like my venture, this is also a can't-lose. I also win, because he'll be living right down the street from me.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

  1. 'But writing IS a -- oh.

Yeah, I can't seem to get a job either. Must be something in the air. ;)

Good news on the editing gig! Great stuff! How'd you come across that one? Do I get to hear the tale? Am I too late to send my manuscript to you without being charged? ;)

Silence. *Sigh* I miss silence. I remember it, sorta, but it's been a long, long time.

  2. A start-up e-pub, and your brother moving down the street - what a great start to the fall for you! Now he can hop over for coffee instead of having to use the phone! Face to face. :) I'm so happy for you, I know you guys have grown pretty close the last few years.

And great news on the e-pub thing! Senior Editor no less! LOL You'll need a desk plaque kind of thing, with your name and title on it. :) "Sherri - BOSS." :D *hugs*

  3. I'm interested in how the e-pub-editing thing works out. Sounds like a good opportunity--it is a credit, after all.

And good on your brother going back to school. My mother went back to college in her 40s. She'd have slight freak outs over her age compared to her classmates, but she did great.

  4. When I know more about the e-pub deal I won't keep it a secret, I promise. One of the ladies starting it is a fellow Oklahoma writer I've known a long time through the Internet, and she was also my connection to Eternal Press. She was consistently one of their bestselling authors and just decided to take control of her own work. It will definitely be interesting to see how it all works out.

  5. Don't feel guilty- in my eyes, looking forward to the silence and space is actually an indication of being a good mom- to me, it means that you are pretty engaged when your kids are around, so why wouldn't you need a little down time?

Kudos on the editing opp and for having a good relationship with your brother. Good stuff :)

  6. Well, stop feeling guilty, missy. Find something fun if you must work. Hey, I'm getting the major cosmetics allergies too. It reallly stinks, doesn't it?

  7. Oh my gosh, really? Yeah, it stinks big time. Finding alternatives takes a little digging, but they are out there. Let me know if you need anything.

  8. Thanks Sarah, that's something I needed to hear. I don't feel guilty anymore! lol Tomorrow's the day...
