I've been busy, but when I look around the house it looks pretty much the same. With the kids gone to school, I'd planned to scrub the summer's grime from the house, a layer at a time. Instead, I've been focusing on projects that keep me busy but don't really have to be done. Like putting a drop-leaf on my new desk, and starting a braided rag rug out of old towels. Wow, I'm crafty. In all fairness to myself, I have scrubbed a layer or two, and I haven't played Metroid Prime once.

It was pretty easy to fall into the school year. Easier to be alone that first day since I knew what to expect. However, we were all nervous about their first day, especially my oldest, who went into middle school. The poor thing was so wired she cried about it several times in the days prior. Of course, on the second day she skipped out to the bus and waved good-bye with a grin. She was fine, as were the other two. And me.

So with the kids at school and my obsessive craftiness satisfied, I'm turning my thoughts toward my next project, whatever that will be. This morning I brainstormed story ideas but didn't get very far. I think I'll start with this half-done middle grade fantasy, to let me sink into the familiarity while I get back into the daily writing thing. I think the creative floodgates are about to open. Y'all stand back. Don't want to get brain juice on ya.

  2. Jeez, y'know, I think getting a li'l brain juice on me would be beneficial. God knows I need something. ;)

I have a new idea brewing too, and a few I could dive into. I have no excuses why I haven't, but now I've provided a few for myself. And of course, I didn't even have to try that hard. :D

Can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

  3. Oh, a little brain juice never hurt anyone, and it comes right out with white vinegar. ;)

Good to hear you feeling so optimistic about your next project hon. I mean writing project. The household ones you do all the time, and I don't think they put the mental requirements on your creativity like writing does.

I did always want to learn how to make rag rugs though - you'll have to teach me one of these days.

And wowee, is middle school there the same as jr high here? 7th grade already? Jr high is awesome - it's like they realize they're a flower and they start to blossom. Lovely stuff. :)

  4. That would cost you $13 at the local dance club.

  5. You know, I'm done saying "I can't," because it's really "I don't want to." Those days I have an excuse, if I really wanted to I could find a way, you know?

  6. Middle school is 6th through 8th. Some places still have jr. high, but everywhere I've lived has had middle school here in central/eastern OK. I think this will be a pivotal year in her development.

The rag rug I'm making is super simple. Get strips of cloth an inch wide, make a braid with them, a looooong one, working in new strips as you go, or you can stitch them together beforehand. Then just roll the braid in a circle, tacking each layer to the one before. That's it. The braiding makes my bad finger ache, so I have to pace myself.

  7. Brain juice? I think we need to come up with a cocktail or imbibable concoction that empitomizes that.

    Let's start with gin...

  8. It's great that everyone eased into the new school year so smoothly. My daughter agonized over 6th grade last year before she started, then found out it was great, just like yours! It's a big deal, middle school.

Here's hoping that brain juice gets to flowing!

  12. Thank you, ladies. Sarah, I don't know how I manage to not reply to you so often. Maybe it has to do with when you're commenting, like it's not in my brain schedule or something. I always THINK I replied and then I get here and...nope. I don't know, but I apologize. :)
