I guess you might have noticed that little birthday counter in my sidebar. I'm REALLY EXCITED (and a little scared) about turning 40 later this month. It's almost like my whole life I've been waiting for this age, but I didn't know it. 40 is mature. Strong. Self-confident. By the time a woman hits 40, she knows what matters and is ready to do something about it. The mid-life awakening (crisis) is nigh, if not already begun, and I welcome the changes that will accompany it.

What is your view of 40, whether or not you've made it there yet?

  1. I'll soon be 42. Knowing what to say about it is difficult. I know more how I am and how I want to be. I see young people differently (they are so oblivious to being young!). I have no idea what is next.

You'll be great at any age, Sherri.

  2. You're sweet. There's no amount of money that would make me relive my youth. Bad stuff happened, and I was confused and fearful most of the time. I don't feel that way anymore. Most of the time.

  3. The older I get, the happier I get. I never knew what life was all about until I reached my forties.

  4. My view of 40? It's over my shoulder.

I'll be 45 soon. Almost half a century old. I feel I should have more wisdom, more patience, more insight and more confidence. Those things seem to be part of a person, not part of an age. I knew people in my 20s who didn't have the brains and maturity I did in their 40s, and I'm not bragging. It's sad. When I see people my age acting like their NOT my age -- fight the clock! fight it!! -- I sort of shrug and shake my head for them. It's a shame.

At almost 45 I'm still getting this "Who am I?" thing worked out. I'm not who I want to be, but day by day I make adjustments. It's easier to say goodbye to what was and embrace what is, right now, than it's ever been. I feel I spent so much time looking forward I didn't spend enough time in the now, and I don't want that to happen when the ahead time is so much shorter than it used to be. The now MUST be bigger. It must.

    My view on 40(s)? I'm way past half-way. Tick-tock. ;)

If I miss it somehow, have a happy, happy, happy birthday. On me. ;)

  5. I don't think we ever stop learning. And what you said about it getting easier to say goodbye to what was is something I've noticed, too. I clung to the same tired things for a long time, longer than I actually got some good out of them, you know? Those things are easier to let go of now.

  6. I was very conscious of turning 40, because it happened while I was in the middle of a Master's program with mostly twenty-somethings. Marta's right, they're so oblivious to how YOUNG they are, and they are very impatient. I find that now, generally speaking, I am more patient, more confident, and more comfortable in my own skin than I ever was when I was younger. It feels good.

  7. Turning forty was great. Fifty, even better. I still have dreams, but the sense of grasping, dodging, struggling that encapsulated so much of my younger days has lessened to a great degree. And more importantly? Men think that forty, girlfriend, is HOT. Trust me on this :).

  8. I agree, even though my skin is looser, I'm more comfortable in it. :)

  9. Ha! I'll have to trust you on it, because no man has ever told me that. lol

  10. What countdown thingy ... oh THERE it is! Had to tell NoScript it was okay. :)

I am reminded of what a certain little girl said to me when I asked her how she felt about turning 5: 'It feels just like 4."

It seemed like such a milestone and although we were going through some rough stuff at the time I turned 40, I realized the milestone was all in my head, that I'd really been 40 for a long time in many ways. I'm also still 17 in lots of other ways too.

What Marta said hits the nail on the head, you'll be great at any age, because while youth may be a thing of beauty, age is a work of art. :)

Love you! No matter how old you are! *hugs*

  11. I can't wait for us both to be in our forties! Once we had both discovered the joys of 30's we would talk about how much better it was than 20's, and I'm sure it will happen all over again, but now we get to look back at how stupid we were in our twenties AND our thirties. It's gonna be fun....but still I think I'll let you try it out for three years before I give it a shot. :D

  12. I've thought about that "fake milestone" thing, but I really feel the number is matching up with how I feel. It's a really strong number. I should go look up the numerology...not that I put much stock in it, but it can be fun.
